What are the benefits of deep cleaning teeth?

You usually think of deep cleaning your teeth as something you do at home after an especially messy meal or before using a home whitening kit, or even before visiting the dentist.

A deep teeth cleaning, on the other hand, is a treatment that a Dentist in Hawthorn or a dental hygienist does, not something you do at home.

Deep teeth cleanings are used to treat periodontal disease. They are often used for people who haven't had routine dental cleaning appointments in a long time, but they can also be recommended for those with gum disease or periodontal issues.

What Is Deep Teeth Cleaning?

A deep teeth cleaning, also known as gum therapy and often referred to as gum scaling and root planing by dentists, is a dental procedure that cleans between the teeth and gums all the way down to the roots.

A dental hygienist or dentist cleans the front, back, and sides of the tooth above the gum line during a regular dental cleaning.

During a thorough teeth cleaning, the dentist goes all the way down to the root of the tooth, below the gum line, to remove tartar and other build-up from the "pocket" that has developed between the root of the tooth and the gums.

When you have gum disease, the pocket between your teeth and gums opens up, widening and deepening the space between them, trapping tartar and plaque.

A safe collection of teeth and gums has a pocket or gap of 3 millimeters or less, but the pocket widens if you have gingivitis or other gum issues.

If your gums have separated 5 millimeters or more from your teeth and roots, your dentist may prescribe a deep teeth cleaning.

Deep cleanings of the teeth typically necessitate two or three visits to the dentist.

The first appointment would be for gum or time scaling, followed by a root planing appointment.

During any of these operations, a local anesthetic is generally used to numb the mouth.

Several weeks after the deep clean, a follow-up visit might be necessary to ensure that everything is healing properly and that the results are satisfactory.

Deep Teeth Cleaning Procedure

The first part of a deep teeth cleaning or dental deep cleaning operation is gum or periodontal scaling, and the second part is root planing.

Electric or ultrasonic instruments, manual dentist scaling equipment, or a combination of the two may be used to perform all aspects of the deep teeth cleaning operation.

A deep teeth cleaning normally consists of two visits: the first for teeth scaling and the second for root planing.

The scaling stage of the procedure removes all plaque and tartar under the gumline.

And there's root planing, which includes using an instrument to clean and smooth the tooth's root and aids in the reattachment of the gums to the tooth, reducing the size of the pocket or cavity that can trap unhealthy build-up.

The dental hygienist will use a scaling tool to remove plaque, tartar, and other build-up from the roots of your teeth during root planing, which is the second phase of the deep teeth cleaning process.

This smoothes the root and allows it to reconnect with the gums, narrowing the gap between the teeth and gums.

Deep teeth cleaning is intended to treat gum diseases such as gingivitis and prevent them from worsening to the point that surgery or other more invasive procedures are needed.

Is a Professional Deep Teeth Cleaning Necessary?

After checking your teeth and gums and taking X-rays to ascertain the overall health of your mouth, your dentist will usually prescribe a deep teeth cleaning.

If your gums are diseased or your gingivitis has progressed to the point that they are pulling away from your teeth and forming pockets or gaps that reveal the bone that are 5 millimeters deep or greater, a deep teeth cleaning is often recommended as the next step before undergoing periodontal surgery.

Be aware that if you don't treat your gingivitis or other gum issues, it could turn into periodontitis, which occurs when the pockets between your teeth and gums become so large that bacteria attacks the bone and supporting structures of your teeth.

If left unchecked, it may cause your teeth to become loose, causing them to fall out or necessitating extraction.

Deep tooth brushing can help shrink pockets and delay or stop the development of gingivitis gum disease.

Deep Teeth Cleaning Benefits

Deep brushing the teeth can help prevent gum diseases like gingivitis from worsening.

Even if we have perfectly good teeth and gums, we all have plenty of bacteria in our mouths.

Plaque develops naturally as bacteria mix with food and other substances, but plaque is usually extracted by brushing and flossing on a regular basis.

If plaque isn't removed by brushing, it hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a skilled dental cleaning.

Gingivitis is a disease in which your gums become red and swollen as a result of tartar buildup on your teeth.

Your teeth can bleed spontaneously or when you brush and floss, even though you are being gentle, if you have gingivitis.

Consistent halitosis or bad breath, extra sensitive or increasingly sensitive teeth, loosening teeth, pain when chewing (especially harder or sticky foods), and a receding gum line are all signs of gum disease.

All of this means that if you have gum disease or gingivitis, which is caused by plaque and tartar build-up between your teeth and gums, a deep teeth cleaning will help you get rid of the plaque and tartar and return your mouth to a healthier state.
